Crossmolina duo make their mark in Boston
News Item added:08-09-2009

TWO Crossmolina players were instrumental in helping a Boston GAA Club to victory in the New England Senior Championship and the North American GAA Finals. Ian Rowland and Seán Kelly spent the summer playing for St Christopher’s of Boston. Christopher’s have been on the scene in Boston for many a year, but had never claimed the title of winners of the New England Senior Championship. This year was to prove different, and as the teams lined up behind the Artane Boys Band, Christopher’s were ready to impress. The opposing team, Shannon Blues, had raised the cup more than once and were to prove a worthy opponent in an exciting and close game. Both Crossmolina men played fantastically as Christopher’s came from behind at half time to claim the title by six points, 0-14 to 0-8. Ian Rowland took all of Christopher’s frees and was right on target. He also scored a number of points from play which were anything but ordinary. As for Seán Kelly, it was hard to tell which position he was playing as he seemed to be everywhere at once. He won much of the ball in midfield and sometimes seemed unstoppable as he carried it forward. St Christopher’s won a tightly-contested game and deservedly won the cup. This put then into the North American GAA Finals, which took place last weekend in Canton, Massachusetts. Teams come from all over the US, including Chicago, San Francisco, Charlotte and Philadelphia. Rowland and Kelly flew back out for the event, and St Christopher’s beat Philadelphia in the senior men’s semi-finals, again after coming from behind. On Sunday afternoon St Christopher’s met Parnells of Chicago, and won by 4-15 to 0-10. It proved to be a very physical game but Parnells were no match for Christopher’s – or for that matter the Crossmolina lads. Rowland was on top form and all eight of his frees went over the bar. He also played a large part in putting a huge distance between the teams with points from play. Rowland’s reading of the game and accurate passing made him one of Christopher’s key players. Seán Kelly too had a magnificent game, displaying an ability to be in the right place at the right time. His strength and speed were valuable assets, and his determination was rewarded with the Most Valuable Player award. Rowland and Kelly flew the Crossmolina flag high and were a credit to their home town as well as their newly adopted team.
OUR reporter Maudy Dooher is from Crossmolina and she and her family reside in Boston, MA.
